Initially, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, prof, welcomed the students. MUDr. Martin Repko, together with representatives of the organizing departments - Petr Štourač from the portal AKUTNĚ.CZ and KDAR FN Brno, dr. Hruda from ARK FNUSA, dr. Hudec from KARIM FN Brno, dr. Jiráčková from ZZS JMK and Mgr. Jan Dvořáček for the Simulation Centre of LF MU and the Institute of Simulation Medicine of LF MU.
After the initial welcome, the students moved to their stations. The morning was spent practising basic first aid, anaesthesiology and emergency medicine skills. Under the supervision of experienced lecturers, students got the opportunity to improve not only the technique of basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures but also to work on effective team communication in providing basic emergency resuscitation (basic life support).
After lunch, the students explored almost every corner of the simulation centre. On the underground floors, they were treated to an experiential simulation of a traffic accident. On the ground floor, they tried loading an injured motorcyclist onto a stretcher and transporting him to an ambulance. They were also waiting for the transfer of a critically ill patient to the emergency department. The teams said goodbye to the emergency room with twenty minutes of CPR, at the end of which they had the opportunity to evaluate their performance using data provided by the simulator. On the floors above, students were able to experience advanced emergency resuscitation (advanced life support) and management of a critically ill child with their team for the first time.
During the afternoon simulations, the importance of communication and teamwork was demonstrated. Each participant had the opportunity to experience the simulations both as a team member and as a team leader.
The highlight of the course was the traditional competition for the Jiří Korbička Prize. The results were so evenly balanced that auxiliary criteria ultimately decided the winner. In a very strong competition, the winning team consisted of Görögová Natália, Ziadehová Adéla and Letovancová Lenka. The winners received the prize from the hands of Jiří Korbička's son, MUDr. Tomáš Korbička, a doctor at KARIM FN Brno. Part of their trophy was also a 5-litre keg of Vorkloster beer, donated by the partner of the AKUTNĚ.CZ Foundation.
The emergency medicine course allowed 48 students interested in emergency medicine to improve their skills and meet new friends. A big thank you to the team of organizers and lecturers, Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine, MU Faculty of Medicine Simulation Centre and AKUTNĚ.CZ Foundation for this opportunity.
We look forward to the 15th year of the Emergency Medicine Course next year!
